the services rendered to various departments by the Telecommunications Division and the work carried out in connexion with official telephone installations throughout Government.

POSTAL SERVICES

38. The total of all postal articles (except parcels, registered and insured items) posted, delivered and in transit through the Colony reached a total of 221,851,500. This is an increase of 16,682,700 or 8.1% on the previous year.

39. Letter and packet mail delivered in the Colony amounted to an estimated 110,859,400, showing an increase of 6,914,000 or 6.7% over last year.

40. The number of letters and packets handled by the Dead Letter Office again increased to a total of 1,965,340. This is 11% higher than last year and represents nearly 2% of all letters and packets posted in the Colony. This high porportion is due to a number of causes such as use of old reference books, failure to ensure that a proper address is given and failure to notify removal to new addresses, especially in cases where buildings are demolished.

Air Mail

41. An estimated 25,860,700 air mail items were posted during the year, exceeding the previous year's total by about 2,562,800 items or 11%.

Forces Mail

42. Mails for Army and Royal Air Force units continued to be handled by the British Forces Post Office. The separate Fleet Mail Office was closed down during the year and its functions taken over by the British Forces Post Office.

43. Arrangements were made for handling mail to and from various visiting foreign warships in accordance with the wishes of the respective overseas postal administration.

Christmas Mails

44. An increase of 8.2% was recorded in postings during Christmas 1964 and approximately 1,360,000 greeting cards were posted on each day of the four-day period up to 23rd December, 1964. A casual labour
