62. There were 29 cases of violation of parcel mails representing an increase of 9 cases over the preceding year's figure. Representations were made to the transport companies concerned.
Registration and Insurance
63. A total of 6,143,359 registered and insured items were handled during the year, exceeding last year's total by 104,541 or approximately 1.7%.
Local Mails
64. Constant surveys were made on delivery beats and revisions introduced as the need arose. Motorized deliveries replaced foot deliveries in many areas and additional vans were brought into use during the
year.
65. Three new delivery beats in the Eastern District of Hong Kong Island were created and the number of delivery beats in the Hung Hom and Sham Shui Po areas were increased.
66. Parcel delivery by van to the urban areas of Kowloon was in- troduced in November 1963 and mechanized delivery for the area from 4 to 15 miles along the Tai Po Road commenced in December 1963.
67. Postmen are being recruited to meet needs of other areas where surveys carried out during the year have shown relief is necessary.
Posting Boxes
68. The number of posting boxes in use at the end of the year totalled 320.
Private Boxes
69. A total of 11,364 private boxes were available to the public at the end of the year, 10,061 of which were rented. Despite the provision of additional boxes wherever possible the demand for this facility con- tinued to grow, the majority of boxes still available being located at outlying Post Offices and not in the main Post Offices.
Temporary Service
70. As in previous years a temporary post office was opened at the 21st Exhibition of Hong Kong Products for the period 3.12.63 to 7.1.64. 71. A temporary post office was also set up on board the s.s. 'Caronia' during her stay in the Colony from 27th to 29th March, 1964 in the course of a world tour.
