89. During the year under review, the Company's major technical programmes carried out were the expansion of the Telex service, the introduction of various automatic correction devices to improve the accuracy of transmission, and the conversion of all telegraph circuits to 5-unit working to raise the speed of handling of inward and outward traffic.

90. The public use of the Company's services increased substantially. The most outstanding increase was in the Telex service, the total number of calls exchanged with other countries being 57% higher than the preceding year.

91. With the increase of Telex subscribers, an auxiliary printergram service, which is the use of teleprinters between the Company's Central Telegraph Office and their clients' offices, for the delivery and acceptance of telegrams has cut down local delays considerably. More than 35,000 messages a month are teletyped direct to and from the clients' tele- printers instead of being handled by messengers.

92. The Phonogram service has filled a genuine need. Approximately 180 telegrams a day are dictated by the public on the telephone to the Company's Phonogram staff for transmission. After local business hours some 50 to 60 incoming telegrams a day are delivered by telephone to the addressees in compliance with special requests.

93. The new Telex services which have been established are as follows:

1. Hong Kong/Algeria

2.

Relayed service via Hong Kong between Taipei at one end and the United Kingdom and the countries beyond at the other.

94. The overseas radiotelephone services, worked in collaboration with the Hong Kong Telephone Company, continue to expand. Hong Kong/Rhodesia, Hong Kong/Suva, Hong Kong/Belize and Hong Kong/ Kuching are the new links. Relay services connected through Hong Kong are Taipei/Jesselton and Japan/Jesselton. Service schedules with several countries have been extended to meet increased demands.
