REMITTANCE SERVICES

30. There were very substantial advances in the numbers and values of both Money Order and Postal Order transactions.

31. Money Orders issued and paid totalled 22,013 valued at $3,302,974 as against 20,907 valued at $2,955,819 in 1958/59.

32. Postal Order transactions totalled 266,052 valued at $12,322,956 as against 202,409 valued at $8,415,162 in the previous year.

33. The combined total of $15,625,930 in respect of Money and Postal Order transactions exceeded the total recorded in 1958/59 by over $4,250,000.

34. Revenue, in the way of commission derived from these services, showed a corresponding increase, the total of $81,768 exceeding the 1958/59 total of $70,905 by $10,863.

STAMPS

35. The decision was taken during the year to add two new stamps to the present series with values of 65 cents and $1.30. These values are used to a large extent for air mail postage and two stamps to cover the values are required at present. The stamps were actually on sale at the time of publishing this report, the first day of issue being 20th June, 1960.

PRIVATE BOXES

36. The demand for private boxes at the two main offices continued to exceed availability but the box lobbies at the General Post Office will be extended when the Air Mail Section is moved to the new Air Mail Centre at Kai Tak Airport. Installation of additional boxes at the Kowloon Post Office was also planned but further expansion at the two offices is unlikely to be possible.

37. Revenue from the renting of private boxes and bag services amounted to $260,659.25, showing an increase of $25,356.25 over the preceding year.

SERVICES TO OTHER DEPARTMENTS

38. The estimated value of free services rendered to other Govern- ment departments increased to a total of $885,214.30 $495,887.50 for the previous year.
