Mr. S. J. Hydes, Senior Postal Accountant, proceeded on leave to the United Kingdom on 30th January, 1958.

Mr. J. M. McNeill, Senior Wireless Inspector, proceeded on leave to the United Kingdom on 3rd April, 1957, and resumed duty on 8th February, 1958. Whilst on leave he attended a course on Radar at the James Watt Memorial College, Greenock, and was successful in obtaining a Radar Maintenance Certificate,

Mr. H. E. Marriott, Assistant Controller of Posts, was selected for a visit to the United Kingdom arranged by Government in co-operation with the British Council. He proceeded to the United Kingdom on 27th May, 1957, and returned on 16th September, 1957.

Mr. MAK Sik Luen, Superintendent, was appointed to act as an Assistant Controller of Posts with effect from 16th January, 1958.

Promotions

14. Mr. Li Yun Gun, Superintendent, was promoted as an Assistant Controller of Posts on 10th May, 1957.

Awards

15. Mr. TSANG Hin, retired Head Postman, was awarded the Imperial Service Medal in the New Year Honours List for his long and faithful service to the Hong Kong Post Office.

Clerical Staff

16. The acute clerical staff position which has existed in this department for many years was greatly relieved by Government's decision to accept for employment as Postal Clerks applicants who possessed the Chinese School Leaving Certificate of the Hong Kong Education Department, provided it contained a pass in English. This, with the increase in clerical posts, resulted in an abnormal influx of clerical staff necessitating much time having to be spent on training. With the posting of a proportion of experienced staff to the new offices, necessary to man the counters and sorting offices of the main Post Offices with staff of only short experience. It will be some time before the benefit of the additional staff will be felt.
