6. The number of wireless licences continued to increase, although severe shortage of staff in the wireless inspection section limited the amount of inquiries and investigations which could be carried out.
7. Shipping outlets continued to be excellent, but delays on some air routes, owing to mechanical trouble, etc., at times caused some irregularity in the receipt and despatch of air mails.
8. Staff training continued throughout the year and was favourably reflected in the manner in which the staff carried out their duties.
9. The stamp vending machines continued to grow in popularity, a total of almost 750,000 ten cent stamps being issued by them during the year. It can now be confidently stated that the use of these machines has proved successful.
STAFF
10. The total authorized establishment of the Department at the close of the year was 787, of which 285 posts were pensionable.
11. The following new posts were approved for the Department:

12. It was with considerable regret that the Post Office had to say goodbye to the Postmaster General, Mr. L. C. Saville, who proceeded on retirement leave in February, 1958. During his ten years in Hong Kong Mr. Saville did much to raise the Hong Kong Post Office to its present high standard of efficiency. He became Postmaster General, Hong Kong, on 8th March, 1950, and will officially retire on 8th September, 1958, after 39 years of postal service, 31 of which were spent in Her Majesty's Oversea Service.
Senior Staff Movements
13. Mr. A. G. Crook, Deputy Postmaster General, returned from leave on 28th January, 1958, and was appointed to act as Postmaster General with effect from 20th February, 1958. Mr. C. G. Folwell, the Chief Postal Accountant, was appointed to act as Deputy Postmaster General from the same date.
Mr. D. A. Hynes, Assistant Controller of Posts, proceeded on leave prior to retirement on 23rd January, 1958.
