53. Wherever possible, further boxes are installed but until really extensive additional space is available, the demand will always exceed the supply.

54. Structural alterations to the Wanchai Office permitted the installation of 105 Private Boxes whilst a further 48 boxes were installed at the new Shatin Post Office opened on 18th October, 1955.

REMITTANCE SERVICES

55. This service continues to grow in popularity and both Money Orders and Postal Orders recorded appreciable advances,

56. Money Orders totalled 16,045 valued at $2,424,891 as against 12,876 valued at $1,947,977 in 1954/55 whilst Postal Orders dealt with were 103,714 valued at $1,906,575 as against 86,392 valued at $1,608,097 in the previous year.

57. The gross total of 119,759 orders valued at $4,331,466 not only represented an increase of over 20% in each case over 1954/55 but was the first occasion on which the turnover exceeded $4,000,000.

58. The revenue from this service was $36,346.

59. At the close of the year arrangements were well in hand for the introduction of self-accounting in the Department as a result of which Remittance Services will be extended to all outlying Post Offices on 1st April, 1956. Unfortunately, how- ever, the town Post Offices are completely inadequate to accommodate this additional business.

MISCELLANEOUS

60. Nine additional Pillar Posting Boxes were installed in the Colony in newly built up areas.
