REDIFFUSION
61. Royalties received by Government from Rediffusion amounted to $530,950, a decrease of $26,670 as compared with the royalties received for the previous year. This was offset by the increased revenue derived from the sale of broadcast receiving licences.
62. The studios of Rediffusion were severely damaged by a fire which broke out in the building on 8.12.54, and it was necessary for Rediffusion to be accommodated in temporary premises until the studios were re-built. Transmissions were interrupted for only a few hours.
WIRELESS SURVEYS AND INSPECTIONS
63. This section of the Post Office wireless inspectorate, which continues to carry out important work, surveyed 180 ships radio stations, and also inspected the radio stations of a further 109 ships. Direction finders of 39 ships were also calibrated. No aircraft stations were surveyed during the year.
The work of surveying radio stations was carried out in accordance with the International Convention covering the safety of life at sea.
TELECOMMUNICATIONS ORDINANCE
64. General. 207 prosecutions against offenders under the Telecommunications Ordinance were successfully conducted during the year, representing an increase of 100 per cent over the number of cases successfully concluded during the preceding year. Of this total nine were for illegal possession of transmitters, involving fines of up to $3,500 or 11 months imprisonment, whilst the remaining 198 cases concerned un- licenced broadcast receivers which carried fines ranging from $5 to $75.
65. Revision of the Ordinance. Steps were taken during the year to finalize amendments which were necessary to the Telecommunications Ordinance.
