The impossible situation which existed at Kowloon due to the lack of space for the delivery postmen and sorters was relieved to some extent by the acquisition of a temporary sorting office, but even the resources of this building are already heavily taxed with the introduction of additional postmen, whilst the situation at Victoria is still far from good.
REMITTANCE SERVICES
55. Despite the trade depression, the number of transac- tions showed an increase of 14,706 orders valued at $607,879, an increase of 17 and 21 per cent respectively.
56. The total number of money orders dealt with totalled 12,876 with a value of $1,947,977, and postal orders 86,392, with a value of $1,608,097.
57. Revenue from remittance services amounted to $34,386, as against $27,433 in the proceeding year.
58. The increases can be attributed to the extension of the hours for the type of business from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m.
RADIO LICENSING AND INSPECTION
59. General. For the first time in many years the number of broadcasting licences registered exceeded the number of sub- scribers to Rediffusion. The increase is attributed to the re- organization of the Wireless Licensing Section, which resulted in increased inspections being carried out. The heavier penalties imposed on defaulters also had good effect.
60. Licences. The number of licences of all kinds in force at the 31st of March, 1955, was 46,403 of which 45,684 were domestic broadcast receiving licences. This represents an in- crease of 4,127 licences over the last year's total.
