INTRODUCTORY
1. I have the honour to submit the following report on the working of the Post Office Department-including the Wireless Licensing Section-for the year ended 31st March, 1953.
STAFF
2. The total authorized staff of the Department at the close of the year was 641 of whom 233 held pensionable appoint- ments. Of the remainder 34 were temporary employees, two officers were on contract and one officer on secondment from the British Post Office. The remainder were non-pensionable staff. During the year 7 officers retired, 7 resigned, 7 were dismissed, 2 were transferred and 1 died.
3. The Assistant Postmaster General, Mr. M. L. Durrant, returned from long leave and resumed duty on 12th January, 1953.
4. Mr. J. M. McNeill was appointed Wireless Inspector. He arrived in the Colony and assumed duty on 17th February, 1953.
5. Mr. D. C. W. Fitches, Controller of Posts, was on leave prior to retirement and Mr. E. J. Thorndike, Assistant Con- troller of Posts, was on leave prior to reversion to the British Post Office. Pending the filling of these two vacancies the remaining small senior staff of the Department is sorely pressed.
FINANCE
6. General. Post Office Revenue at $15,534,868 exceeded the estimate by $2,678,868. The major increase was in revenue from postage which at $15,387,929 was $2,537,929 over the
