ANNUAL REPORT
The year under review has been marked by continued progress in all branches despite acute difficulties of accommodation, equipment and staffs and my thanks are due to all members of the Department for their loyal co-operation.
Staff.
(A) POST OFFICE.
Mr. E. I. Wynne-Jones, Postmaster General, left the Colony in February, 1948 on leave prior to retirement. His place as Postmaster General has been taken by Mr. J. H. B. Lee.
Mr. C. G. M. Morrison was appointed Assistant Postmaster General on 22nd May, 1947, and acted as Postmaster General during the absence of Mr. E. I. Wynne-Jones from the 17th November to 28th December, 1947.
Mr. L. C. Saville of the Colonial Postal Service arrived in November, 1947 to take up appointment as Assistant Postmaster General and Chief Accountant.
Mr. D. C. W. Fitches, Superintendent, was promoted to be Assistant Controller of Posts as from 18th November, 1947.
Mails, Registered Articles and Parcels.
2. Full details are shewn in Tables I, II and III.
3. Without exception, every class of mail showed a sub- stantial increase and further records were established.
4. The most outstanding increase was in parcel traffic which rose from 175,764 parcels in 1946/47 to 334,540 parcels in 1947/48. This latter figure easily exceeds the previous record of 300,280 parcels in 1939. Much of the increase was due to the large number of food parcels despatched to the United Kingdom.
5. The number of parcel bags received from Canton for reshipment to Shanghai increased from 10,654 in 1946/47 to 35,607 in 1947/48.
6. Another record was in the number of 1,621,769 registered and insured items handled, as against the previous record of 1,615,040 in 1939, and 1,337,420 in 1946/47.
7. 22,598 bags of mail weighing 677,940 lbs. were received and despatched by air.
Revenue and Expenditure.
8. Detailed statements are given in Tables IV, V & VI. 9. The excess of revenue over expenditure amounted to $5,244,097.
