The following comments should be read in conjunction with the Audited Consolidated Financial Statements of Hong Kong
Ferry (Holdings) Company Limited and the related notes on
the accounts.
Results of Operations
Total turnover for the Group decreased by 14.5% from HK$1,279.7 million in 1996 to HK$1,093.7 million in this year, which was mainly due to divestment of the supermarket business in December 1996. Profit from operations amounted to HK$190.3 million, representing an increase of 8.8% as compared to that recorded in the previous year. Net earnings of the Group amounted to HK$152.3 million in this year,
representing a minor increase of 1% over last year.
Fare revision of 8.3% for franchised ferry services was
effective in June 1997. Patronage of local ferry services
decreased by 4 million from 33.2 million in 1996 to 29.2 million
in this year. Due to repeated violent incidents in Macau,
patronage of and fare revenue from the Macau ferry service
also dropped significantly by 21% and 19% respectively when
compared with 1996. As a result, fare and freight revenue for
the year decreased by HK$47 million when compared to last year. On the other hand, the Gold Coast charter ferry service
was suspended in October 1997,but additional revenue of
HK$29 million from other launch hire and excursion services,
including charter ferry service to Chek Lap Kok Airport, resulted in a net decrease in total revenue of the Ferry Operations of 1% only. Rental income from the industrial buildings in Tai Kok Tsui suffered from the possible redevelopment of the site and recorded a decrease of 9%. The
currency turmoil in Asia, decline in the number of incoming tourists and heavy rainfall in the last summer season badly
affected the results of the Hotel and Travel businesses.
However, diversification to non-marine works helped boost
business of the Shipyard Operation whose results improved by 16% while focused efforts in wholesale and fuel oil businesses gave rise to a big jump of 51% in operating results
of the Trading Division.
