YOUR LINE TO TAKE AND Qs & AS ON HMG/PRC EXCHANGES
1. We have been through the Qs & As you faxed to Peter Ricketts, together with News Department, with a particular eye to the UK audience.
We thought they covered the ground extremely well.
2. We have two small modifications to suggest, plus a line on Sir Percy Cradock:-
(2) We think this answer reads better with the sentence "These matters are confidential" omitted. The confidentiality point is better covered in question and answer (3).
- To (7) we suggest the following reply: "The Governor keeps in very close touch with the Prime Minister and the Prime Minister has agreed to releasing this material".
- (4) What about Sir Percy Cradock's exchanges?
"Sir Percy Cradock's visit to Peking in December 1989 was part of the continuing dialogue between Chinese and British officials over Hong Kong. He put to the Chinese our views on the drafting of the Basic Law, in particular the need for a faster pace of democratic development in Hong Kong."
Yours ever, Kaz
