NOTE FOR EXECUTIVE COUNCIL

MASS TRANSIT RAILWAY ISLAND LINE :

TIN HAU STATION

I

On 17th November 1981, having considered memorandum XCC(81)118 on the cost of construction of the Mass Transit Railway Island Line, Council advised and the Governor ordered, inter alia, that the Corporation should construct Tin Hau Station by cut and cover methods, subject to the implications described in paragraphs 30-33 of that memorandum.

2

Under normal circumstances construction of underground stations by cut and cover methods is less costly than construction by bored tunnelling and it was on this basis that the Corporation made its request regarding Tin Hau Station. However, in the detailed redesigning of Tin Hau Station in order to allow cut and cover construction, it was discovered that the foundations for the two related property development towers at Tin Hau, being integral with the station concourses and tunnels, posed complications which required complex temporary works to be carried out in difficult ground conditions. It was then apparent that the total cost to the Corporation of the station and the foundations for the property development towers would be greater with cut and cover than with bored tunnel construction.

3

The Corporation has therefore reverted to the original concept of bored tunnel construction for Tin Hau Station which from the viewpoint of noise and surface disruption will be less intrusive to people living or working in the area.
