ACTION
CONFIDENTIAL
14 Mrs Bell asked what officials could say to the commercial interests involved with the US option. Mr Havelock noted that Sir Walter Marshall probably knew most of what was available to Departments, and that withdrawal from the Westinghouse/NNC option should wait until Ministers and the Prime Minister had reviewed the position. He saw the time table as: an early meeting with the French, followed by a discussion with Sir Walter Marshall, a submission to Ministers and the Prime Minister, and only then a substantive approach to Westinghouse and NNC. In conclusion, Mr Uden said that the State Department would also need to be informed of the change in policy, although this could readily be justified on the grounds of customer choice.
