BRITISH INVESTMENT IN CHINA THROUGH HONG KONG
1.
I was grateful to Nick O'Brien in Peking for bringing the Swire Group's investment in China to your attention (his letter of 2 August). Two further projects have come to light which may involve the kind of investment in which you are interested, depending on your definition for the purposes of this exercise, of a British company and of what constitutes a fixed investment.
2. The first is the Jackie and John Company's interest in property development in China. This company, owned by Jackie Lam and John Ip MBE, is UK based but its business is centred on China and Hong Kong, where it has several subsidiary companies. Jackie and John has a financial share (size unknown) in a consortium involved in a HK $500 million commercial and residential property development in the Shenzhen Special Economic Zone. They also have an interest (although as yet no financial stake) in a property development project in the Zhuhai SEZ.
3. The second is KCA Minerals' barite project in Guangxi. KCA have arranged the supply and installation of a barite mining and processing plant against product which they will market on their own account. Strictly speaking this is a five-year compensation trade agreement but as the arrangements have been made through the company's Hong Kong office it may still be of interest to you.
