CHAPTER 5 : ACTIVITY IN SELECTED SECTORS

Manufacturing

5.1

As the quantity of electricity consumed by the

manufacturing sector in the first quarter was only

only about 18

higher than in the corresponding period of 1981,

of 1981, there was

probably not much increase in activity in the manufacturing

sector, a view confirmed by the figures on domestic exports.

On the basis of electricity consumed, the performance of

individual industries within the manufacturing sector varied.

Although consumption by the electrical goods, toys and

electronics industries increased, for some other industries,

notably the textiles industry, it fell.

5.2

Indexes of production are available for the textiles

industry. Although they showed some improvement in the fourth

quarter compared with the third quarter, production in 1981

was generally lower than in 1980. The indexes for the first

quarter of 1982 were not available at the time of writing this

report.
