Salaries in the tertiary services sector continued to increase

rapidly. For example, payroll per person engaged in the

wholesale and retail sector was 7% higher in real terms in

December 1981 than in December 1980.

Construction

wage rates, for which monthly

statistics are available, increased in money terms by 12%

during the twelve months ending February 1982. There was thus

no increase in real terms. The situation varied between

workers with different skills. Wage rates for divers, for

example, who were in short supply, increased by 76% during the

twelve months ending February 1982 whereas wage rates for

steel benders increased by only 9%.
