The slowing down in the growth rate of re-exports

concentrated in re-exports to China, now the largest

market for goods re-exported from Hong Kong. The value of re-exports to China in the first quarter of this year was only 11% higher than in the first quarter of 1981, compared with a

growth rate of 73% for the year 1981. The slowing down was more marked in respect of consumer items. Re-exports of goods

originating from China, however, continued to grow
