(6) For the purposes of subsection (1)(b) references to citizenship of the United Kingdom and Colonies shall, in relation to a time before the year 1949, be construed as refer- ences to British nationality.

10 22. For the purposes of this Act a citizen of the British Depen-

(a) he was born in a dependent territory and is a citizen of Dependent the British Dependent Territories by virtue of section Territories 13 or registration under paragraph 4 of Schedule 2 ;

or

(b) though born outside the dependent territories, he is a citizen of the British Dependent Territories by virtue of section 14(1)(b); or

(c) though born outside the dependent territories, he is a

person so born before commencement-

(i) who was a citizen of the United Kingdom and Colonies immediately before commencement and at commencement became a citizen of the British Dependent Territories; and

(ii) whose father was at the time of the birth serv- ing outside the dependent territories in Crown service under the government of a dependent territory or service of any description at any time designated under section 14(3), his recruitment for the service in question having taken place in a dependent ter- ritory (no matter which); or

(d) he was born in a dependent territory on or after 1st January 1949 and before commencement, and became a citizen of the United Kingdom and Colonies at birth by virtue of section 4 of the 1948 Act (citizenship by birth); or

(e) he was born in a dependent territory before 1st January 1949, became a British subject at birth, and on 1st January 1949 became a citizen of the United Kingdom and Colonies by virtue of section 12(1)(a) of the 1948 Act; or

by virtue of birth in a dependent territory ".
