PART I

3.—(1) If while a person is a minor an application is made for his registration as a British citizen, the Secretary of State Acquisition may, if he thinks fit, cause him to be registered as such a citizen. by registration:

(2) A person born outside the United Kingdom shall be 5 entitled, on an application for his registration as a British citizen made within the period of twelve months from the date of the birth, to be registered as such a citizen if the Secretary of State is satisfied that the following requirements are or were fulfilled in the case of either his father or his mother ("the 10 parent in question "), namely--

(a) that the parent in question was a British citizen at the

time of the birth; and

(b) that throughout the period of five years ending with the date of the birth the parent in question was employed wholly or mainly outside the United King- dom in employment to which this subsection applies; and

(c) that the nature or terms and conditions of that employ- ment involved a close connection with the United King- dom; and

(d) that the parent in question intends to maintain a close connection with the United Kingdom or, if the parent in question has died since the birth, that he or she had that intention at the time of birth.

(3) Subsection (2) applies to full-time employment—

(a) with any company or association established in the

United Kingdom;

(b) with any company or association established outside the United Kingdom, so long as the employee is em- ployed by that company or association on secondment from an associated company or association established in the United Kingdom;

(c) under any international organisation of which the United Kingdom or Her Majesty's government therein is a member;

(d) under the government of a dependent territory, if the employee's appointment was effected by the Crown Agents for Oversea Governments and Administrations or by the official representative in the United Kingdom of that government; or

minors.

(e) in respect of which an agreement entered into by the

Secretary of State under section 12 of the Overseas 1980 c. 63. Development and Co-operation Act 1980 (power to meet expenses incurred in connection with employment
