TRANSFER OF UK RELATED RECORDS FROM HONG KONG

1. The Hong Kong Immigration Department have asked us what Immigration records we require to be transferred to the new Consulate General in 1996/7.

The HKID, unlike any other visa issuing post, keep most of their records on microfilm in huge machines each weighing about two and a half tons. They have also kept paper records since July 1992. We would prefer to take only the paper records, which, at handover, will cover a period of five years, and reckon that five years worth of records will meet our needs.

DSP (extract attached) requires that records be kept for varying periods in some cases for up to twelve years, but we have been unable to find out the basis for this requirement, ie is it an administrative one or a legal one?

4. I should be grateful to know if there is any legal objection to a decision to keep only the paper records. wish to avoid investment in a microfilm system which is very expensive and totally incompatible with our other systems.
