CHEUNG MA RAILWAY PROJECT
- HKG is considering the proposal and has sought more information from Cheung Kong. The company has yet to respond.
- As the Cheung Ma project is very closely related to the new
railway development strategy on which Chinese views will be
required, it will be necessary to get an overall steer from the Chinese before proceeding.
BRITISH CHAMBER OF COMMERCE IN HONG KONG
We are keen to include the British Chamber of Commerce in the
new Consulate General building if that can be arranged.
There are some technical difficulties over the lease which we
are looking at.
- As you may be aware, I have written to James Chiu saying that we understand that the architects will be able to expand the area allocated for the Chamber's use (from 107 to 200 sq.m).
We shall need to charge the British Chamber of Commerce a fair rent for the space they occupy.
[If pressed]
There is no possibility of public money being used to give the Chamber rent free space.
[Defensive if raised]
- DTI made a grant of £60,000 to assist the BSCC (formerly British Soviet Chamber of Commerce) move to new premises in Moscow. But there is no question of any precedent having been set for assistance with the rent.
