Thank you for your letter of 28 September about the new Consulate-General building in Hong Kong.
I am pleased to confirm that the contract for the site formation and foundation has been awarded to Trafalgar House's subsidiary company Gammon. I plan to visit the site during my forthcoming visit.
We are all agreed on the profile and importance of the new building. British companies will be given every opportunity to tender for the work. The FCO Overseas Estate Department will discuss the proposed tender list for the main contract with me before it is agreed. We are always conscious of the UK's wider interests but must of course work within EC regulations and Treasury guidelines.
I will be happy to keep in touch with you during the tendering process for Hong Kong and on other major projects like Berlin.
