SATCOM COMMUNICATIONS FROM NEW SITE

A site inspection was made of the compound on which the new Consulate General will be built, to assess the likely viability of providing satellite communications. The plot is considerably lower down the hill side than the present location and it is most improbable that access will be available to the Indian Ocean satellite.

Inspection confirmed this belief even with a launch angle of 33 degrees it will be difficult to clear the mountains and high rise buildings which adorn the upper hill. More success may be possible using the Pacific Ocean Region satellite. Although that satellite is at an elevation of only 15 degrees it should just be possible to squeeze between two large high rise buildings and there is the added advantage of the land continuing to drop away.

It will require careful choice of site for the dish installation and it must be recognised that this site may be our Achilles heel and that Satcom communications may prove to be impractical.

PHOTOGRAPHS: Unfortunately most of the photographs were not of sufficient quality to allow reproduction, this was especially true of those showing the proposed new location for the equipment.
