BRITISH INTERESTS IN HONG KONG

British Consulate General in Hong Kong

- It is the Government's objective that Britain's official

representation in Hong Kong after the transfer of sovereignty

in 1997 should act as a mark of Britain's continuing interest

in and commitment to Hong Kong.

- The FCO Memorandum in March set out the background to the

cost free acquisition of a prestigious site in Supreme Court Road (Colvin House). We took possession of the Colvin House site in May this year. The design plan for a substantial building which will house the various elements that make up British representation in Hong Kong after 1997, including the

British Council is in the final stages of refinement.

Demolition of Colvin House and the construction of foundation

works are scheduled to start shortly.

The total estimated cost of the project is almost £27.6M at May 92 price levels for which there is provision in the Supply

Estimates.

What will be the involvement of British commercial interests

in this project?

The Foreign and Commonwealth office commissioned six

architectural practices to prepare initial sketch designs.

The six were all sound UK practices or practices with UK connections and with strong representation in Hong Kong. design by Terry Farrell and Co Ltd (reputed British practice)

was chosen by the FCO as the most suitable high quality design. and is of particularly high quality. Other
