PRITISH EMBASSY, PARIS: OVERALL OBJECTIVES 1993/94
A.
1.
General
To play our full part in developing the close cooperation with France "vital to the achievement of all [our foreign policy] goals" (FCO Priorities 1992-5).
2.
By maintaining the widest possible range of contacts with
· French decision-makers and centres of influence, to ensure that the British Government is fully informed about and exerts maximum possible influence over all French policy matters affecting British interests.
3. To put over Britain in France as a friendly, modern, effective and cultured neighbour and to try to correct prejudiced or ill-informed views of Britain.
4. On international issues to identify and pursue joint interests through bilateral consultation and cooperation.
To promote British exports to France and British economic interests here.

To secure French understanding of, and where possible, support for, UK policies in the European Community.

7. To project an accurate and positive view of UK economic and social policies and performance.
8. To encourage the evolution of French defence policy in a direction helpful to UK interests, and to expand areas of defence cooperation.
9. To ensure efficient, cost-effective management of the Embassy's resources and assets, including an ongoing programme of essential maintenance of the estate.
10. To provide an efficient consular/visa service and to protect the rights of UK citizens in France.

In particular the Ambassador:
will meet and get to know a wide range of influential French personalities at the highest possible level to put across and gain understanding of British policies and to further (2)-(8) above;
will support senior ministerial and other visits from the UK and facilitate their contact with senior French personalities;
will maintain regular working links with the political, official, financial, commercial and cultural establishments in the UK as a means of
