Ministers agreed to approach the Attorney General along the Lines suggested in your TUR. Mr Goodlad accordingly wrote to Sir Nicholas Lyell who has agreed to send a letter to the new French Minister of Justice. Text as amended by the Attorney General following a meeting with Miss Brooks and Mrs Barnes Jones is in MIFT. Unless you see strong objection to the text as it now stands, please take immediate action to pass the text to to Ministry of Justice, once the text has been translated into French, offering the Embassy as a post box for any response. Please tell the Ministry that a signed original will follow in due course. The Attorney General would like to sign a copy of the letter in French, so grateful if you could fax the translation to us for typing up
for typing up in the Atorney General's office.

The Attorney General is taking a close interest in the outcome of this bid for extradition to Hong Kong.
For your information only at this stage, the Attorney General will be paying a private visit to France over the (British)
the (British) May Bank Holiday. Depending on the French reaction to his letter he might be able to fit in a call on the Minister of Justice on the morning of 10 May. Grateful for your (and Hong Kong's) views.
