The frauds came to light during the investigation of the murder of the Assistant Manager of BMFL in Hong Kong, Jalil Ibrahim, who was killed on the afternoon of 19 July 1983 which was the date upon which the last advance was made to the Carrian Group. One man was convicted of murdering Jalil Ibrahim but, it has always been thought that the crime was committed by two men and that it was initiated by someone other than the individual who was convicted. Of course, there has been much speculation as to who was behind the murder but no hard facts. The other death was that of the senior partner of the Hong Kong solicitors firm, Deacons, which acted for both the Carrian Group and BMFL. After the police investigations into the Carrian Group commenced, he was found at the bottom of his swimming pool with a man-hole cover tied to his neck. The verdict of the inquest was that he committed suicide. Fear for his own personal safety was, of course, one of the reasons put forward by Lorrain Osman as to why he should not return to Hong Kong. In the case of DRS, one could argue that he is at less risk in prison in Hong Kong than wandering the streets of Paris.

I am grateful to you for your advice as to the various deadlines. I understand that the period of fifteen days for our next submission will start running once the Ministry of Justice has lodged its observations.

I shall be grateful if you will discuss the above points with Madame Masse-Dessen and Professor Cohen and revert with further details of the information you require from us in Hong Kong and the date by which you require such information.

Kind regards

R S Best
