Sir,

12 July, 1971.

I have the honour to acknowledge receipt of your Note of 12 July 1971, which reads as follows:

"I have the honour to refer to the Agreement between the Republic of Austria and the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland concerning the abolition of visas, constituted by Notes exchanged at Vienna on the 3rd of April 1968(1) as amended by the Notes exchanged on the 9th of June 1969(2) and on the 27th of May 1970,(3) and to inform you that the Passport Act, 1969, Federal Law Gazette No. 422, which entered into force on the 1st of January 1971, introduced, inter alia, new Austrian identity cards. Austrian identity cards which were issued up to and including the 31st of December 1970, shall remain valid until such date as is specified in each of the documents concerned. The form and contents of the new identity cards are set out in Annex D 1(4) which is appended to the present Note.

I therefore have the honour to propose that the Agreement be amended as follows:

(1) Sub Paragraph (2) (a) (iii) should read:

<

a valid Austrian identity card, specimens of which are enclosed as Annex D or Annex D 1 together with a British Visitor's Card, a specimen of which is enclosed as Annex E.'

(2) Annex D 1 should be inserted after Annex D.

If the foregoing proposals are acceptable to the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, I have the honour to suggest that the present Note and your reply to that effect shall constitute an Agreement between the Republic of Austria and the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland in this matter which shall enter into force on the fourteenth day following the Exchange of Notes.”

I have the honour to inform you that the foregoing proposals are acceptable to the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland and that in consequence your Note together with this reply shall constitute an Agreement between the two Contracting States in this matter which shall enter into force on the fourteenth day following the Exchange of Notes.(*)

(1) Treaty Series No. 56 (1968), Cmnd. 3696. (2) Treaty Series No. 96 (1969), Cmnd. 4143. (") Treaty Series No. 94 (1970), Cmnd. 4502. (4) Not reproduced.

(*) The Exchange of Notes entered into force on 26 July 1971.
