A2.

Will UK sign the Schengen Convention?

It

The UK has no plans to sign the Schengen Convention. involves nine geographically homogeneous countries with long

land frontiers, who traditionally have had to rely more on

internal than frontier controls. But for islands like the

UK, with only limited points of entry, it is common sense for

some controls to remain at the water's edge.

Do you regard the Schengen arrangement as a setback for BN (0) and HKBDTC passport holders?

We are obviously unhappy about the effect this arrangement

would have for such passport holders as regards their access to Schengen countries if they are included in the CVL. That is why the UK and HK governments are lobbying the Schengen

countries.

A4.

With Britain and HK lobbying hard on this case, do you think

there is a chance that HK might be exempted?

We will try our best to get Hong Kong excluded from the CVL.

If Hong Kong were to be included in the CVL would this encourage other countries outside Europe to require visas from Hong Kong passport holders?

No.

I don't think this would happen because everyone knows

this is about Europe trying to get together, trying to move forward on unity. European countries are not becoming tougher on visas. They are just trying to make one visa for

all of Europe. It's an internal move to unite Europe.
