Regarding

you requested on the rules governing the acquisition of Portuguese nationality in Macau, I am sending you herewith the texts of the Portuguese Law of Nationality and the relevant extracts from the Joint Statement by the Portuguese and Chinese Governments on Macau, and related Annexes.

According to Article 6th of the Nationality Law, the Portuguese nationality may be given to foreigners who fulfill all the following conditions: a) to be adults, according to the Portugese law; b) living for more six years in Portuguese territory or under Portuguese administration; c) reasonable knowledge of the Portuguese language; d) honest character; e) economic means of subsistence.

This includes, of course, residents in Macau. But, according to the Joint Statement, issued 13 April 1987, Macau will cease to be territory under Portuguese administration on the 20th December 1999. From that day on the said Article 6th of the PNL cannot be applicable
