Tokyo, 15th August 1993

The Right Honourable, Prime Minister of Japan Morihiro Hosokowa,

Dear Sir,

I am in Tokyo to attend the International Forum on War Reparations Asia Pacific Region, 14th August and a Memorial Service, today. This is my third visit to Japan, the first was in 1946 where my evidence was used as a former prisoner-of-war of the Imperial Army from February 1942 to 6th September 1945. My second visit for the publication of my book in Japanese last year in July, I will forward copies.

At 08:00 on 11th August I was preparing to fly to Tokyo and asked to speak on my mission to Japan where I was also to meet representatives of Nikko Kyodo who have merged with Nippon Mining the company that owned the mine I slaved in as a P.O.W. in Taiwan. At this Forum I was also trying to represent all ex P.O.W.s from America, Australia, Canada, New Zealand, Netherlands and United Kingdom on the question of an apology compensation.

and

Before speaking on radio, I was asked to listen very carefully to your press conference remarks. I cried with emotion as I heard three words "aggression", "mistake" and "atonement" for that terrible war. As I told all Hong Kong listeners I would change my speech already sent to Tokyo to include mine and I was certain millions of others thoughts.

Also I have now met Yasuko Takemura who represented your Speaker Doi San at an emotional meeting on Thursday, 12th and yesterday at the Forum. I said I was astonished, overwhelmed at your honest remarks and salute you for your

for your frankness and honesty. I knew of your grandfather, the illustrious, Prince Konoye who died in horror after his efforts to end that terrible war in 1945.
