The Government has, as you know, given repeated assurances about the admissibility to the United Kingdom of members of this group if they were to come under pressure to leave Hong Kong and had nowhere else to go. Charles Wardle announced the conclusion which we have reached in answer to a Written Question from Graham Allen on 26 July, a copy of which I attach.
I am very sorry not to be able to send you a more welcome reply. I know that this is a subject over which your own knowledge and experience leads you to wholly understandable and justified conclusions, but we have given great
consideration to all which was said in the debate, and I am afraid that that is the decision at which the Home Secretary has arrived.
