would be alert for anything they interpreted as an attempt to restrict the government's undertaking to the ethnic community only. I now attach a press cutting from the South China Morning Post (SCMP) of 20 June. Ms Lau is lining up for the charge
(third column) and in the process misrepresents the delegation's call on Mr Goodlad; the Minister made it quite plain that his remarks addressed solely the situation of the ethnic minorities.
4.
I spoke to Mr Llewyllen at Government House they are
declining to comment on the substance of the article and are referring all questions to the Home Office. They expect further
attacks when Ms Lau chairs a meeting on 23 June of the
Nationality sub-committee.
5. The Home Office are aware of the SCMP article and of the
likelihood of further pot stirring at the LegCo
sub-committee meeting. They are still considering the terms of
the restatement of the undertaking promised by Mr Howard.
