Parliamentary scrutiny of Hong Kong Orders in Council

1.

The Home Office has told me that the Commons Standing

Committee on Statutory Instruments will debate the two Hong Kong

Orders in Council (one relating to the British Nationality

Scheme; the other to the British Nationals (Overseas)

Registration Programme) on 7 July at 16.30. They have asked

whether Hong Kong Department or Mr Goodlad's office have any thoughts on which MPs might usefully be drafted on to this Committee. The Home Office need any nominations by noon on

JUNE 23 July.

The Minister will presumably wish to consider asking

Mr Kynoch to serve on the Commmittee. In addition, other MPs

who have recently expressed interest in Hong Kong in helpful ways include Mr Lidington, Mr Renton and Mr Jonathan Evans.

The Home Office do not yet know when the Lords will consider

these Orders in Council.
