Dr. Dinesh Singh (the Minister for External Affairs) told the House that New Delhi had made it clear that it is the basic responsibility of the British Government to safeguard the interests of people of Indian origin in Hong Kong who are holding British passports. He said India has raised the matter with the British and Chinese Governments in viow of Hong Kong being reverted to China on July 1, 1997. Minister said the British had given assurance that they will consider their case with sympathy for admitting them into Britain if they are to leave Hong Kong. He said a senior Chinese official has also said that these people have the option of applying for Chinese citizenship if they so desire."
