All BDTC

The British Government have announced that a Hong

Kong BDTC can now be allowed, if he wishes, to retain his

BDTC passport when he is issued with a BN (0) passport. Hong Kong BDTC who has surrendered his BDTC passport

exchange for a BN (0) passport is now also allowed to

re-apply for a BDTC passport. Such arrangements do not

affect the validity of the BDTC passport. passports will be valid up to, but not

not beyond, 30 June

BN (0) passports will continue to be valid after 30

June 1997. However no one will be able to register as a

BN (0) and thus acquire a BN (0) passport after 30 June 1997, except that eligible persons born on or after 1 January

1997 but before 1 July 1997 may obtain or be included in

such a passport up to 31 December 1997.

1997.

I should also stress that there is

that there is no change to

the BN (0) phased registration programme about, which the

Chinese side have been informed. Any Hong Kong BDTC who

wishes to register as a BN (0) must register for a BN (0) passport before the cut-off date appropriate to his age group. A Hong Kong BDTC who applies after the relevant cut-off date will only be registered if there are special

circumstances that justify his registration. The

BN (0) phased registration programme is entirely voluntary.
