SECRETARY OF STATE'S VISIT TO THE FAR EAST:
1.
EASTER 1994
The Private Secretary asked some time ago that we consult the Governor about the possibility of the Secretary of State visiting Hong Kong as part of his Asia tour next Easter.
2. We consulted the Governor, who delayed a response while. he established his own movements during that period. Government House have now confirmed to us that the Governor will be in the UK for Easter and the week following it, returning to Hong Kong on 10 April. He plans to write personally to the Secretary of State to explain the problem: it has to do with is daughter's 21st birthday party.
3. I understand that the Governor is very sorry that he will not be able to be in Hong Kong at the time projected for the Secretary of State's visit. It therefore looks as if it will not be possible for the Secretary of State to visit Hong Kong on this trip. I do not believe that it would be right for the Secretary of State to visit the territory when the Governor was not there.
