A GEC-Alsthom led consortium has been awarded an £800m contract for the 3 x 660 MW Shajiao C coal fired power station in Guangdong Province, South China. This station will be owned and operated for 20 years by a joint venture company set up between Guangdong General Power Company and Hopewell Energy of Hong Kong.

GEC Alsthom/GE (USA) have won the contract to supply the power generation plant for China Light & Power's Black Point Power Station. The total contract price is in excess of £1 billion with some 40% to be sourced from the UK.

Ministerial Visits to Hong Kong

The Minister for Trade visited Hong Kong in January and April 1993 and in July 1992. Other recent visitors include: Baroness Denton (May) and Mr Rifkind (January); Mrs Bottomley, Mr Redwood and Mr Hunt (September). Forthcoming visitors include: Secretary of State for Scotland and Minister for Trade (October).

Hong Kong Economy

Hong Kong economy grew by 3.9% in 1991, and by 5% in 1992. Estimated 5.5% growth in 1993.

Hong Kong is 10th largest trader in the world. Re- exports now account for over two-thirds of total exports, China being the largest market for, as well as source of, Hong Kong's re-exports (31% and 57% respectively of total for Jan-May 1993).
