Speaking note for British Council reception

- The British Council's sterling efforts in English language teaching and promoting the use of the English language in Hong Kong play a very important role in strengthening Britain's ties with the territory.

The Council's commitment and skills in the fields of education, culture and the environment, to name but a few, is widely recognised. Two recent examples of this are:

a contract with the Hong Kong Government for an intensive English language programme for secondary school students;

- a request from the Guangdong Environmental

Protection Bureau that the Council co-ordinate a follow-up to the international workshop on pollution control in the Pearl River Delta.

These links which have been built up over many years in the past will, I am sure, continue to be of enormous importance after 1997 and long into the future.
