MR GOODLAD ́S VISIT TO HONG KONG 11-12 OCTOBER

BRIEF NO

OPENING REMARKS TO PRESS STAND-UP ON ARRIVAL

Delighted to be here again. Nearly five months since my last

visit.

- Then we had recently succeeded in getting talks underway with China on the 1994/95 election arrangements. Since then we have had 12 rounds and the thirteenth is now taking place in Peking.

I know many people in Hong Kong are impatient to see results.

As the Foreign Secretary made clear in New York, we have been

working very hard indeed to achieve a successful outcome. We

genuinely want to get an agreement which would meet our

essential objectives of fair and open elections and objective

criteria for confirming passengers on the through train.

should not be impossible.

This

As always on my visits to Hong Kong, I am very much looking forward to meeting ExCo, and discussing with them and with the

Governor a range of matters of importance to Hong Kong.

- I shall be meeting members of the Legislative Council, and I am sure they will be putting to me the concerns of the Community on a wide range of issues.

- Later today I shall be receiving a briefing from the Secretary

of Education and Manpower, and also visiting Central and Western

District. Very much look forward to that.

- I also have meetings with the British Chamber of Commerce and

with the British Council. In other words what should prove to be yet another exciting and stimulating visit!
