Request to

extend the

United Nations

Convention on

the

Elimination of

all forms of

Discrimination

Against Women

(CEDAW) to

Hong Kong

A Working Group chaired by the Secretary for Education and manpower has examined the question of sex discrimination in employment in 1992 and

concluded that there was little

evidence to suggest widespread or systematic discrimination against women in employment.

In December 1992, the

Legislative Council passed a motion calling on the Hong Kong

Government to request the

British Government to take the

necessary action to extend CEDAW

to Hong Kong.

The Social status of women is

essentially a question of the community's attitudes and

convictions. The Government is

preparing a Green Paper on Equal Opportunities for Women and Men,

which should be ready in the latter part of this year.
