Background

The community is concerned about the chances of China's MFN
status being renewed without
conditions by the US
Administration. Recent press reports on US thinking were not to China's favour. Non-renewal
or renewal with unacceptable
conditions to China will have
catastrophic effects on Hong Kong's economy. Industries will
be hardest hit.
The British and Hong Kong
Governments will continue to do
all they can to explain to the U.S. Administration the likely impact on Hong Kong of non-renewal or qualified renewal of MFN for
China.
