Chemical Waste
The new $1.3 billion Chemical Waste Treatment Centre opened this April. It employs sophisticated disposal techniques to treat the estimated 100,000 tonnes of chemical waste produced annually. Coupled with legislation to control the production, storage, movement and disposal of chemical waste, this
this will
provide a practical and economic alternative to in-house
treatment.
Solid Waste
Hong Kong's future strategy for the disposal of the more than 20,000 tonnes of solid waste generated daily comprises 3 large landfills in remote areas, serviced by a network of 7 refuse transfer stations. Two transfer stations are already operating while tenders for a third, and tenders for two of the landfills have been called. The design-build-operate basis of
the contracts ensures unity of responsibility.
The capital cost
of the programme is estimated to be over $12 billion, including sums spent on providing facilities for radioactive and clinical wastes and restoring older landfill sites.
Air Pollution Control
The whole of Hong Kong was declared as an Air Control Zone in 1990. Regulations prohibiting the use of high sulphur fuel oil were brought into effect in July 1990. In April 1991, unleaded petrol was introduced (60% take up rate).
