John,
Peter Ricketts kindly sent us a copy of report (dated 3 June 1993) of Mr Goodlad's visit to Hong Kong.
It was suggested in paragraph 10 that the Minister Would aim to visit Hong Kong in October this year or January 1994 and that transport might be "an appropriate sub-text".
I thought it might be helpful to your in my preliminary comments at
planning if I fed this early stage.
As far as the Governor is concerned, if the visit were in October, it would be better if the visit could be towards the end of the month. This is because, as you know, early in October he will prepare for and deliver his Legislative Council address (on 6 October). He will then conduct a series of public meetings over the following ten days or so.
If transport were chosen as the visit theme, a visit in late October would also help Transport Branch since we already have two transport-related visits to Hong Kong during that month
Lord Douglas-Hamilton, Minister for Transport at the Scottish office (5-15 October) MI Steven Norris, Minister for Transport (11-17 October).
and
:
If Mr Goodlad were to decide to come in January, you may
may wish
to know that the Governor might make a visit to London from 21-27 January to by the DAVOS meeting from
be
followed
28-30 January.
