Dear Mr Goodlad
You will be aware that I have been selected by the British Chamber of Commerce in Hong Kong as its next Executive Director, I will start the appointment in January 1994. The Chairman James Chiu and William Courtauld have asked me to use the intervening time to best effect in the interests of the Chamber where my duties permit. They have suggested that as a high priority I should seek an `audience' with both you and Mr Richard Needham before I take up the appointment. I am due to be in the United
I am due Kingdom on business with the Ministry of Defence during the week 21 to 23 September. I realize that in Ministerial terms this is short notice but it is unlikely that I will be in London before I leave the Army and I wondered if you think that it would be of value for me to visit you and if there is room in your programme.
My programme for my visit to the United Kingdom is pretty flexible except for 3 pm on the 21st of September 1993 and lunch on the 24th when I am due to sit in' on a meeting which James Chiu is addressing at the London Chamber of Commerce. If you wish to see me perhaps your staff could suggest a convenient time.
Naturally I am very excited at the prospect of this challenging and interesting appointment and want to do what I can to prepare myself properly for it. I am particularly conscious of the importance of the political intervention on our behalf and I am keen to improve communications between the membership and visiting or responsible government agencies.
Yours Sincerely
