VISIT OF THE SECRETARY OF STATE TO WASHINGTON, 21-22 SEPTEMBER: REVISED CALL FOR BRIEFS
Deadline: 1700 Thursday 16 September
1.
The Secretary of State's plans to visit the United States on his way back from New Zealand have changed. He will now travel to Washington from London on 21 September after attending the joint FAC/Agriculture Committee meeting on 20 September in Brussels. I attach a copy of the programme.
2. My minute of 6 September called for briefing based on the latest information then available from Washington. We have now received further advice about the subjects which Secretary Christopher is likely to raise. The list of subjects on which briefing will be required has therefore been amended. I should be grateful if departments would provide briefing as follows. First named departments to lead please. Would departments please indicate any points which are not for discussion with members of Congress or the press.
Transatlantic issues:
NATO/European Defence including NATO Summit, outreach to the East and possible enlargement
Bosnia
GATT (depending on the outcome of the Joint
FAC/Agriculture Council on 20 September)
Russia/FSU (including economic issues)
Iran/Iraq/Gulf Security
