5. Personnel changes within the Chinese Government will not be formally decided until 26 March. However, best predictions suggest that Party General-Secretary Jiang Zenin will become President in place of Yang Shangkun and that Premier Li Peng will retain his position for a second five year term. Foreign Minister Qian Qichen and Foreign Trade Minister Li Langing are both expected to become Vice-Premiers.
6. Chinese Vice-President Wang Zhen died on 12 March at the age of 85. Wang was a noted hard-liner and supported the military suppression of the June 1989 demonstrations, but illness had prevented him from exercising any real influence within the leadership since 1991.
