1. This is just to confirm our telephone conversation the other day when I said that I would be calling in at Seoul and Taipei, respectively, before and after the Far Eastern Commercial Officers' Conference in Hong Kong at the end of this month. It would be very helpful if you could let me have a short political brief on Korea and Taiwan as background for my visit. And I would be grateful if Peter Ricketts could let me have something on Hong Kong. I do not require anything specially produced, just a copy of whatever standard brief you have.
2. I shall of course be looking at the Commercial Sections, and talking to David Wright and Philip Morrice about commercial work in some detail. In particular, I want to assess the impact of the recent changes in export promotion work (Export Promoters in particular), the resource demands made by Ministerial visits, and Posts' capacity to absorb any more responsive work without jeopardising their essential initiative work.
3. I am also copying this minute to Graham Boyce in ESED with the request for a copy of the brief on Nuclear Electric's efforts to sell in Taiwan and South Korea which he is producing for the Secretary of State.
